New Stephen King Show Stars Ben Barnes

A new Stephen King series will grace our television screens soon. MGM+ has finally unveiled the trailer for The Institute, an upcoming horror series starring Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds). It is based on the author’s best-selling 2019 thriller novel of the same name.

Apart from the big screen, King’s work has also made its way to television. This includes The Stand, The Outsider, Castle Rock, Lisey’s Story, and more. With Mike Flanagan working on a Carrie television adaptation and It: Welcome to Derry arriving this fall, The Institute will be the latest work from the author to be receiving the series adaptation treatment, set for release on July 13, 2025.

What happens in The Institute trailer?

The trailer for the forthcoming eight-episode series opens with Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman), a 12-year-old boy who mysteriously wakes up one day in a facility called The Institute. He has no idea how he got there, and a group of children — each possessing special abilities, just like him — seem to have shared the same fate.

Luke isn’t even sure whether his parents know where he is or if he was kidnapped without their knowledge. All he and the other children know is that they must find a way out. Meanwhile, as the facility continues to experiment on the children, Barnes’ “disillusioned ex-cop” Tim Jamieson begins to grow suspicious of the shady facility run by Ms. Sigsby (Parker).

The official synopsis reads as follows: “When 12-year-old genius Luke Ellis is kidnapped, he awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did, and who are all possessed of unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (Barnes) has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won’t last, as his story and Luke’s are destined to collide.”

The Institute also stars Simone Miller, Hannah Galway, Martin Roach, Fionn Laird, Robert Joy, and Julian Richings, among others.

The Institute premieres on MGM+ on July 13.
