A new dance trend called the ‘Sofia Dance’ has been making a lot of waves on TikTok. Fans have since become curious about this trend and its origins. What does this dance trend involve? Moreover, is the ‘Sofia Dance’ complicated to partake in?
Here is everything we have learned about this viral new trend.
‘Sofia Dance’ trend on TikTok explained
The ‘Sofia Dance’ trend on TikTok involves people doing a backward swaying dance with simple yet rhythmic movements.
While doing this, the participants also jam and sing along to the following lyrics of the song “Messy” by Lola Young:
“Cause I’m too messy and then I’m too f**king clean,
You told me to get a job then you ask where the hell I’ve been,
And I’m too perfect ’til I open my big mouth.”
This trend was reportedly popularized by its namesake Sofia Richie, a social media personality and model. It all started on November 28, when TikToker Jake Shane uploaded a video of himself and Richie jamming to Messy and singing the aforementioned lyrics in sync.
In this video, Shane can be seen performing a simple dance where he stretches his hands forward with each beat. Meanwhile, Richie is shown doing a backward swaying movement, followed by several laid-back and simple dance movements.

Other users quickly recreated the dance on TikTok. Besides, some even added minor tweaks to their performance. For instance, user @alone.pierre danced while holding a coffee cup and drinking it. The simplicity of the Sofia Dance trend in contrast to other more-complicated dance trends like the Superman dance has become its major appeal.
Some users, however, were baffled by the new dance trend and shared their thoughts. “I refuse to believe the internet is losing their s**t over a girl moving her shoulders to the beat for 4 seconds, wrote @aliciamaree.xx. Meanwhile, another user called @meemshou poked fun at people calling the trend the “Sofia Richie dance,” and pointed out how it was just having rhythm.
