Miley Cyrus revealed she faced a health scare while co-hosting NBC’s New Year’s Eve special in 2023. In a conversation on The Zane Lowe Interview for Apple Music, the singer shared that she was secretly going through a serious medical emergency at the time. It was an ovarian cyst that ruptured unexpectedly.
The singer said, “I had an ovarian cyst rupture, which we didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did it, but it was pretty traumatic, cause it was extremely excruciating.” Although she was in severe discomfort, Cyrus still went on with the show, which featured performances with her godmother, Dolly Parton. Together, they delivered duets of “Wrecking Ball,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You.” The special was produced by SNL creator Lorne Michaels.
Cyrus described the experience as “pretty traumatic” and said it made her question whether she should continue her music career. However, a conversation with Michaels offered her the clarity she needed. Over dinner, he told her, “Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild.” Cyrus says that this advice really helped her. She states, “And it was Christmas by then and that was New Year’s, so I was expired on my amount of time that I was able to shut down.”
Later in the interview, Cyrus discussed struggles caused by a large vocal cord polyp. The singer said that the condition “has given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am.” However, she also acknowledges the strain it places on her performances.
As of now, Cyrus is preparing to release her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, on May 30. She will also release a companion film alongside the album.
