Weight Loss Story: Defeating sleep apnea, this software engineer lost 20 kgs by following this fitness routine

At 57, Venkata Krishna, a vegetarian software consultant, experienced a life-changing moment when a close friend, who was a fitness enthusiast, passed away unexpectedly. The death of a loved one became the turning point for Venkata which compelled him to get fit and claim his body back. This is an inspiring weight loss story of how one can regain their health at any age, while managing diabetes and balancing professional life.

History of weight loss and health struggles

Venkata’s weight reached a whopping 89 kgs in 2008, which became a gateway for major health complications such as sleep apnea. Determined to take matters in hand, he worked out relentlessly for 15 months and successfully got to his ideal weight of 69 kgs. However, like many others, Venkata’s weight gradually returned once he stopped the rigorous routine. By 2017, he had regained 78 kgs which brought back the existing health issues.
However, this time, he was diagnosed with diabetes. With medications and healthy eating, managing his blood sugar became difficult. The situation deteriorated when his HbA1c values reached 11.8, which indicated that his blood sugar was out of control. Venkata blamed it on not being active enough and consistent with his medicine which led to his declining health.

The wake-up call

Venkata couldn’t ignore the wake-up call he received around nine months ago when a close friend died. His friend died unexpectedly, who had been fit and seemed healthy. This hardship of life reinforced the message: health should not be taken for granted. However, Venkata used this tragedy as a motivation to get in control of his health and resolved to take extraordinary measures to recover from the setback.

Seeking professional help and making lifestyle changes

Initially, Venkata turned to a health coach program that provided tips and methods to help him manage his diabetes. With their help, he made some big adjustments in his daily diet and meal timing. The second and most important step was to incorporate regular physical activity. He began walking after every meal and incorporating strength training into his routine. This daily and consistent routine helped him reach his fitness goal.

Changes in diet and approach to food

Diet also played an important influence in his transformation. Venkata changed his eating habits by incorporating more fiber and protein into his meals. One of the most significant modifications was introducing millets into his lunch, which are known for their low glycemic index and great nutritional value. He also began eating dinner earlier, which considerably helped to stabilize his blood sugar levels.
Venkata’s weight and medication levels both decreased as a result of these modifications. He was able to lower his diabetes medication dosage from 2000 mg to 500 mg per day, with the intention of reducing it even more in the near future.

Understanding of the body and health

Venkata grew increasingly interested in studying about the body and how nutrition and exercise affect general health. He was inspired by fitness and health professionals on Youtube and followed their methods. Watching their content helped him comprehend the science behind good health and inspired him to stay on track.
