Verizon launches non-emergency satellite texting service

Today Verizon has announced the launch of its non-emergency satellite texting service. This will let you text anyone by connecting to satellites with your Google Pixel 9 series device or your Samsung Galaxy S25 series smartphone.

It comes as an expansion of the carrier’s previously launched emergency-only satellite connectivity, which also works for the aforementioned phones only. Verizon boasts that the new satellite texting capabilities enable its customers to be “the first in the US to send text messages to any other customer device via satellite when outside the reach of terrestrial cellular networks”.

Verizon launches non-emergency satellite texting service

“Upgrades enabling this service” are set to start today and will continue over the next two weeks, according to Big Red (does anyone still call it that?). This wording makes us believe that Pixel 9 units and Galaxy S25 devices on Verizon need to receive a software update which allows this to work, so if you do have one of those Pixels or S25s on Verizon, look out for an update in the next few days.
