A Venom and Spider-Man crossover movie was pretty close to happening at one point, according to Venom star Tom Hardy.
What did Tom Hardy say about a Venom and Spider-Man crossover?
During a recent appearance on The Playlist’s The Discourse Podcast, Hardy revealed that at one point, a crossover movie featuring both his Venom and Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man “got as close” as he could imagine to happening, before things unfortunately fell apart at the finish line.
“We got close,” Hardy said of the movie. “We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun.”
Hardy was asked if it was studio politics that ultimately killed the possibility, and while Hardy didn’t directly confirm this, he did say that it didn’t happen “for all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there.”
“Fundamentally, for me, it would be for the kids,” said Hardy of why he wanted to do the movie. “Because, you know, as much as adults love superhero films, as you can tell by the box office when they’re successful, I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are. And they don’t know why their favorite characters aren’t in films together.”
The possibility of a crossover film between Hardy’s Venom and Holland’s Spider-Man has been something fans have been hoping for for some time. Hardy himself had been a champion for the idea for years, although following the 2025 Venom: The Last Dance, it seems as if Hardy has officially retired from playing the character.
Despite never getting to clash with Spider-Man, Hardy still said that he felt “really privileged” to get to do three movies with such an iconic character.
“We were given a set of boundaries, and we were just really privileged to be able to play with a much-beloved IP like Venom in a way that we were allowed to play,” Hardy said. “And in that [regard], we did what we could and what we loved doing. We poured all of ourselves into it within the limits of what we were allowed to do with him. And so the enjoyment of the work outweighed the limits of our possibilities with him because we just focused on what we were allowed to do. And we loved doing it.”
