United States men’s national team manager Mauricio Pochettino told the BBC that he wants to coach in the English Premier League again.
Pochettino was Tottenham’s boss from 2014-2019 and led Spurs to one of the most successful spells in club history. Pochettino didn’t win any trophies during his time in North London, but Tottenham reached a Champions League final and the team’s domestic second-place finish in 2017 was its first in 50 years.
“The Premier League is the best in the world. Of course I miss it. I am so happy in the USA, but I am always thinking about returning one day,” Pochettino told the BBC. “It is the most competitive league, and of course I would love to come back again.”
Pochettino had also managed Premier League club Southampton before taking the Tottenham job and returned to England to oversee Chelsea in 2023, lasting less than a year with the Blues.
Pochettino was appointed the USMNT manager in Sept. 2024 with eyes on the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico and Canada. His team received a favorable draw for the 48-team tournament and will face Paraguay, Australia and a to-be-determined European opponent in the group stage next summer.
While he prepares to manage in the World Cup, the 53-year-old Argentine – who played in the 2002 tournament –told the BBC that winning the Premier and Champions Leagues are his ultimate career goals.
“We were so close in Tottenham. I want to achieve this,” Pochettino said. “I am still young, I have the energy, experience and motivation to try in the future.”
