The live action TV show adaptation of the blockbuster Far Cry video game franchise has officially received a green light. FX has placed a series order for the show, which will be helmed by the creator of Alien: Earth.
FX gives series order to Noah Hawley and Rob Mac’s Far Cry live-action TV show
The studio confirmed that it will develop Far Cry as a limited anthology series. Each season will tell a new story in a new setting and feature a different cast. This format matches the design of the video game franchise, which resets its characters and locations with each installment.
The project comes from Fargo and Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co creator Rob Mac, who will also star. The series will stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.
Hawley highlighted the appeal of adapting the series, saying, “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme.” He added that creating an action series that shifts its narrative each year while exploring complex themes is “a dream come true” (via Deadline).
Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, noted the network’s longstanding collaboration with both creators. “FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry,” he said. Grad thanked Ubisoft for entrusting FX with the adaptation. He also expressed confidence that the series will be “original, gripping and wildly entertaining.”
Since debuting in 2004, the Far Cry franchise has drawn more than 100 million unique players. Ubisoft’s series features open world environments, first person combat and standalone narrative arcs. The most recent title is Far Cry 6, released in 2021, which features Giancarlo Esposito as antagonist Antón Castillo.
