Trade War Truce? Trump’s Inaugural Invitation to Xi Sparks Buzz

Beijing, Dec 12 (EFE).- US President-elect Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration, which will take place on Jan. 20 in the US capital, American television network CBS reported.

Trump has also invited other leaders including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

CBS, which cites “multiple” anonymous sources familiar with the situation, did not specify whether the Chinese leader has accepted the invitation.

If he does, Xi, who usually appoints special envoys to represent him at the inaugurations of international leaders, would become the first Chinese leader to attend the inauguration of a US president.

Xi and Trump last met in June 2019, on the sidelines of the G20 summit held in the Japanese city of Osaka.

The Republican, who started a trade war with the Asian giant in his first term (2017-2021), promised during his recent election campaign to impose new tariffs on Chinese imports.

Trade disagreements between the two countries have continued even during the term of current US President Joe Biden.

In fact, Biden, in his last weeks before the transfer of power, announced measures to restrict the development of chips in China, to which Beijing responded by banning the export to the US of key metals such as gallium, germanium, antimony and graphite.

This week, Xi asked Washington to work with Beijing to drive bilateral relations toward a steady, healthy and sustainable direction.

“Tariff wars, trade wars and sci-tech wars go against the trend of history and the laws of economics, and there will be no winners,” warned the Chinese president during a meeting with financial institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization.
