Three games, 19 goals! Premier League serves up chaotic afternoon

The three 3 p.m. (10 a.m. ET) Premier League games delivered chaos, late drama, and plenty of goals on Saturday, giving fans a thrilling mid-afternoon spectacle.

From Turf Moor to Anfield and St James’ Park, moments of brilliance, controversial calls, and stoppage-time twists kept every team and fan on edge.

In fact, the seven-goal thrillers at Burnley and Liverpool are the highest-scoring 3 p.m. games all season, per ESPN Global Research.

As the race for Europe heats up and clubs fight for momentum, Saturday’s action offered a glimpse of just how unpredictable the Premier League can be.

Here, ESPN rounds up all the action.

Burnley’s spirited fightback counted for nothing as Mikkel Damsgaard struck in injury time to earn Brentford a dramatic 4-3 victory at Turf Moor.

Bees boss Keith Andrew looked set to celebrate his new long-term deal with a comfortable win amid a mutinous atmosphere when first-half goals from Damsgaard, Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade put the visitors three up.

But an own goal from Michael Kayode at the end of the first half was followed by efforts from Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming, with the latter then seeing a fourth ruled out for the most marginal of offsides.

There was a cruel sting in the tail for the hosts, though, as three minutes into stoppage time Damsgaard tucked the ball into the bottom corner.

Still Burnley thought they had earned a point when, with the clock ticking towards 100 minutes, veteran Ashley Barnes found the net only for VAR to intervene again and the goal be ruled out for handball.

Liverpool’s transformation from set-piece failures to the top-flight’s in-form side underpinned a 5-2 win over West Ham which maintained their bid for Champions League qualification.

Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister scored from first-half corners, becoming only the second team in the competition’s history after Manchester United in 2016 to do so.

Cody Gakpo scored his first league goal in eight matches and the nerves were eased when Axel Disasi turned in Jeremie Frimpong‘s cross after Tomás Soucek and Taty Castellanos had made things a little less comfortable.

Liverpool moved level with fourth-placed Manchester United having reduced their goal difference disadvantage to one goal, while blowing a hole in the Hammers’ recent revival after taking 11 points from 18.

Thierno Barry came off the bench to fire Everton to Premier League victory at Newcastle for the second successive season in a dramatic conclusion to a madcap encounter.

Barry struck seconds after fellow substitute Jacob Murphy looked to have snatched a draw for the hosts to claim a 3-2 win and condemn the Magpies to a third successive league defeat at St James’ Park, although it took a stunning late save by Jordan Pickford to seal it.

Jarrad Branthwaite had headed the visitors into an early lead which was cancelled out by Jacob Ramsey, but Nick Pope‘s blunder handed Beto a second goal on a plate.

Eddie Howe’s men, who had lost to Aston Villa and Brentford in their previous two home games, have now won just one of their seven most recent league fixtures and find themselves in the wrong half of the table heading into a brutal run of fixtures in three different competitions in March.

By contrast, the Toffees climbed into eighth place as they hit 40 points, just five adrift of the top six, after a committed display.

What happened in the other PL games on Saturday?

Substitute Evanilson claimed a second-half equaliser as Bournemouth stretched their unbeaten run to eight Premier League games by battling back to draw 1-1 against Sunderland.

Eliezer Mayenda volleyed the Blacks Cats into an early lead at Vitality Stadium with his first goal since the opening weekend of the season.

But the visitors were denied a first top-flight away victory since October when Evanilson converted Marcus Tavernier‘s cross with his shoulder 27 minutes from time.

Antoine Semenyo’s first-half goal sealed Manchester City a hard-fought 1-0 win at Leeds and lifted his side to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Semenyo maintained his impressive goalscoring form since joining City from Bournemouth in January, clinically converting a rare chance for the visitors in stoppage time before the interval.

City’s fourth straight league win kept the pressure on Arsenal before their home game against derby rivals Chelsea on Sunday, while Leeds were left to rue a string of missed first-half chances.

Daniel Farke’s relegation battlers lost for just the third time in 15 league matches, suffering a rare defeat under the Elland Road floodlights, to stay six points above the bottom three.
