The total number of apps distributed on the App Store and Google Play increased by 60% year-on-year, suggesting a global app boom driven by AI.

A research firm has shown that the number of global app releases in the first quarter of 2026 will increase by 60% year-over-year on both the iOS App Store and Android Google Play. While some predicted that the proliferation of AI would reduce reliance on mobile apps, it’s possible that AI is actually driving the app development boom.

On April 15, 2026, technology YouTube channel Tom’s Guide conducted an exclusive interview with Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, and Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Turnus , to commemorate Apple’s 50th anniversary. The interview covered the intentions behind the new, lower-priced MacBook Neo , which debuted in March 2026, as well as Apple’s product philosophy and approach to AI.

In the interview, Tom’s Guide asked, ‘With Siri handling a variety of tasks and controlling apps, is there a possibility that this could lead to the ‘end of apps’?’ Joswiak replied, ‘The App Store is still going strong. I can say that with certainty. Rumors that the App Store will end in the age of AI are probably quite exaggerated.’

In fact, data from Appfigures , a reporting platform for mobile app developers, shows that global app releases in the first quarter of 2026 (January-March) increased by 60% year-over-year for both iOS and Android, with iOS showing an even more significant increase of 80%. Furthermore, as of April 2026, the total number of app releases for iOS and Android combined increased by 104% year-over-year, with iOS alone seeing an 89% increase.

The following are the top-ranking app genres among those released in the first quarter of 2024-2026. Games are number one in all categories, but in the first quarter of 2026, ‘Productivity’ and ‘Health & Fitness’ also ranked highly.

Some industry leaders speculated that the need for standalone applications would decrease as users shifted to conversational interfaces and AI chatbots and agents completely replaced traditional apps. Carl Pei, co-founder and CEO of Nothing , the UK smartphone manufacturer that produces the ‘ Phone ‘ series, said, ‘Smartphone apps will disappear as AI agents replace them.’ However, data from Appfigures suggests that the development of AI tools is making it easier for individuals with limited skills to develop apps, and that an ‘app development boom’ is actually underway.

The app development boom means that users will have more choices and the possibility of encountering more innovative tools as the number of apps increases. On the other hand, the rapid increase in apps makes it difficult to distinguish between trustworthy apps and spam or harmful apps, highlighting the need for users to have a strong security awareness and for platforms to implement stricter monitoring systems.
