Donegal has been ranked by popular travel guide Lonely Planet as the fourth best spot on Earth – and we’re not surprised why.

With its rugged mountains, beautiful landscapes and wonderful coastal hiking trails, Donegal is renowned for its natural beauty.
Lonely Planet commended the gorgeous county for its peace, quiet and friendly atmosphere.
The travel guides also honed in on the counties fascinating and rich heritage of the Irish language and of course its delightful musical traditions.
A trip to Donegal for any traveller is filled with immersive experiences and a visit to to breathtaking Slieve League has to be at the top of the list.
Famous for being one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, this glorious landscape offers the most amazing views of the Donegal and Sligo coastlines and of course the Atlantic Ocean.
Donegal is awash with ancient forts and castles too, An Grianan of Aileach and the marvellous Glenveagh castle are just two out of a variety of stunning historical grounds.
Speaking on the Lonely Planet ranking, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr Martin Harley said: “Being ranked by Lonely Planet as one of the best regions in the world to visit is a significant milestone for Donegal.
“It’s the second time in five years we’ve received recognition from Lonely Planet which named Donegal as the coolest place on the planet in 2017.
“This again speaks to the rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality that our county offers.”
The announcement that the charming county was placed on Lonely Planet’s list of best places to visit in the world comes just after the new “It’s ours/It’s your’s” campaign.
The new campaign was launched with aims to showcase the unique appeal, stunning natural beauty and interesting cultural heritage of Donegal, making it a must see destination for tourists across the globe.
The smart tourism campaign features Donegal native, comedian Eric Roberts who presents the country as one of Ireland’s “best keep secrets”.
The humorous campaign shows locals who are trying to keep their beautiful county hidden from the rest of the world, amidst it’s growing global attention from tourists.
