The Devil Wears Prada 2 Has Dramatically Better Box Office Predictions

A new box office projection for The Devil Wears Prada 2 would have Miranda Priestly giving one nod, maybe even two. The upcoming sequel to the fan-favorite 2006 comedy drama, which finally reunites Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci together again, received favorable predictions in late March. This was built upon a trailer for the film released in February that received over 14 million views on YouTube, revealing how much fans have been waiting for a modern follow-up to the original classic. The Devil Wears Prada 2, distributed by Disney’s 20th Century Studios, is slated to release on May 1, 2026, in the US.

How much is The Devil Wears Prada 2 expected to make in its opening weekend?

For its domestic opener, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is expected to earn somewhere between $80 million to $95 million, as of April 3, 2026.

These latest numbers come from BoxOffice Pro and are a substantial increase over an early projection that predicted the movie would earn $55 million. The report points to the fact that Meryl Streep, who holds the Oscar record of 21 acting nominations, has not been in a non-voiceover role since 2019, so her relative absence from the silver screen will attract many moviegoers to see the film.

By comparison, the original movie only earned $27.5 million in its opening weekend, though its popularity at the theaters had it bringing in over $126 million domestically by the end of its run. It was also a surprising hit overseas, raking in $201 million at the international box office for a total of $326 million overall, far surpassing its mere $35 million budget. With numbers like these, it’s surprising a sequel wasn’t made sooner.

It’s still unclear how much The Devil Wears Prada 2 would need to make at the box office to break even, since details of its production budget have not yet been disclosed. One of the only scraps of information we have is an interview Streep had on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert where she revealed that the $35 million budget for the original film was apparently low because it was categorized as a chick flick. “That designation has kind of not worn well, you know? … We had to scrabble for our budget,” the actress said. “This one, honey — they spent the money.”

Much of the budget was likely allocated to securing talent in its star-studded cast, which includes the likes of Lucy Liu, B.J. Novak, Rachel Bloom, and Sydney Sweeney. There will also be surprising cameos by fashion legend Donatella Versace and pop icons Ciara and Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, Justin Theroux will play Emily Charlton’s husband in the sequel, while Kenneth Branagh plays Miranda Preistly’s husband.

One of the main advantages the movie has at the box office is that it features the original cast, the original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, and original director David Frankel, who would all be the best choices for updating the classic film. In this sequel, Andrea “Andy” Sachs returns to Runway magazine as a features editor as Miranda Priestly attempts to navigate the new digital landscape in fashion and secure funding for the struggling magazine from Emily Charlton, who has become at head of a luxury brand. Interestingly, the plot doesn’t follow the literary sequel by Lauren Weisberger called “Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns,” where Andy is instead the editor of a bridal magazine whose life is suddenly upended by Miranda.

The movie is targeted toward women as the core demographic, which is largely an underserved audience in the industry, despite films like Barbie, Moana, and Bridesmaids. It’s only major competition in the theatrical calendar is the Michael biopic that releases a week earlier on April 24, so it should have plenty of time to become one of the main blockbusters in early spring.
