The Devil Wears Prada 2 Continues Box Office Dominance, Beats Part 1 Easily

The Devil Wears Prada 2 continued its strong theatrical run after securing another major box office milestone. The long-awaited sequel maintained momentum during its second weekend while also moving past the worldwide earnings of the original 2006 film.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 stays on top in its second weekend

According to Box Office Mojo, The Devil Wears Prada 2 remained first at the domestic box office during its second weekend. The sequel earned $43 million domestically from May 8 to May 10. However, its second weekend dropped 44 percent from the $76.7 million opening weekend. Meanwhile, the film expanded from 4,150 theaters to 4,200 theaters during the frame.

The sequel also defeated Mortal Kombat II and Michael during the Mother’s Day weekend race. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat II earned a projected $38.7 million opening weekend. Michael collected an estimated $36.5 million during its third weekend. Additionally, Deadline reported the sequel earned $14.9 million on Saturday alone. Analysts also projected Mother’s Day audiences strengthened ticket sales.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 beats its predecessor in global dominance

The Devil Wears Prada 2 earned $433.2 million worldwide after two weekends. Meanwhile, the sequel collected $144.8 million domestically and $288.4 million internationally. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributed the sequel worldwide. In comparison, the original 2006 film finished with $326.5 million globally during its complete theatrical run.

As a result, the sequel surpassed the original film’s worldwide total by more than $106 million within two weekends. The original film earned $124.7 million domestically and $201.8 million internationally. Meanwhile, the first movie opened with $27.5 million domestically during June 2006. By contrast, the sequel opened with $76.7 million domestically across 4,150 theaters.

Additionally, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci returned for the sequel. The story follows Miranda Priestly navigating declining magazine publishing and advertising competition. Previously, the original film followed Andy Sachs beginning work for Miranda Priestly at a fashion magazine. Both films carried PG-13 ratings and comedy-drama classifications.
