Universal Tone is Tecno’s proprietary tech that aims to ensure a correct representation of people from all skin tones in the photos taken by its cameras. Now the company announced it is improving the it with an expanded color card. The first phones to implement the richer set are the Camon 40 series, set to arrive at MWC Barcelona in March.
The update includes an upgraded multi-skin tone color card with 372 patches and enhancements to the engine responsible for reproducing realistic skin tones in portrait photos.
Tecno states that the aim is to develop an “even more inclusive and comprehensive database that represents a wide range of global skin tones.”
This update is expected to improve results for people from areas such as Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, which are the regions where Tecno currently conducts operations.
The improvements to the Universal Tone technology also include a refined skin tone rendition algorithm and more accurate white balance.
This would achieve, at least in theory, an overall improvement of over 50% in skin tone accuracy in portrait photos in various lighting conditions.
