Summer holidays: how to make the most of them with your pets

Holidays with pets in the UK are becoming increasingly popular, especially with the rise of dog and cat-friendly holiday accommodation, alongside the growing appeal across Britain of mobile home holidays.

According to recent search engine analysis from Together Travel, there’s been a 28 per cent increase over the past four years in people planning to take their pets on holiday in the UK.

Here’s a few things to remember when preparing for a fantastic summer break with your dog or cat, not too far from home.

Getting ready for the journey

You may be raring to go – but will your pet feel comfortable?

Before setting off, it’s important to assess whether your dog or cat is up for the adventure. While some pets thrive on new experiences, others may be better suited to staying at home with a pet sitter, a friendly trusted face, or at a cattery or kennel.

Start by evaluating if your pet will flourish in a new environment and what type of holiday would suit them best.

Ask yourself questions such as:

  • Is your pet worried or overwhelmed by new experiences?
  • Does your pet adapt well to crowds?
  • Is your pet relaxed or at least able to tolerate long car trips?

Your vet can provide advice and guidance on taking your pet on holiday.

Next, get things ready for the trip, including bedding, food, and other essentials. Invest in a comfortable and secure pet carrier for cats or a travel harness for dogs. Bring along familiar items like their favourite toys and bedding to help them feel at home.

Driving with pets – things to remember

A secure harness or crate is a must for car journeys

When travelling by car, dogs should be secured in a crate (ideally one designed for car travel) or behind a dog barrier, ideally in the boot. Alternatively you can use a seat belt harness that attaches to an ordinary car safety belt on the back seat. These measures will help prevent them injuring themselves or others should there be an accident.

For cats, a sturdy carrier is essential. Make sure it’s strong, secure, easy to clean (in case of accidents) and large enough for your cat.

Ensure your cat is given time to get accustomed to the carrier, starting at home in a relaxed environment at least several weeks before you go on your journey. Seek advice from your vet on how to do this.

You may choose to let them walk in and out of the carrier indoors for a while beforehand so it’s not such a shock when they are kept in one on a car journey, and it can also be beneficial to place a blanket, towel or something with a familiar scent for comfort in the carrier.

Remember to make frequent stops for comfort breaks and exercise, and never leave pets alone in a parked car, especially in the summer, as temperatures can soar dangerously high in minutes.

It also pays to plan your route to take in pet-friendly service stations and scenic spots for safe and enjoyable breaks.

Travelling on public transport

Check on the pet policies of the transport company you’re using

Travelling by train or bus with pets requires a bit more planning. Most UK train companies allow dogs and cats, but they must be kept on a lead or in a carrier. Check with the specific company for their pet policies.

On buses, smaller pets in carriers are often allowed, but it’s best to confirm with the operator beforehand. Remember to pack water, snacks, and poo bags for the journey.

Choosing pet-friendly accommodation

There are plenty of useful resources online to find the
right stay

Finding the right place to stay is crucial for a stress-free holiday. Many hotels, B&Bs, and holiday cottages in the UK now welcome pets.

Websites such as PetsPyjamas and DogFriendly list numerous pet-friendly options. When booking, enquire about any additional fees or restrictions. Ensure the accommodation has safe outdoor areas for your pet to explore.

Embracing the camper van life

A mobile home can offer flexibility, but make sure you keep your pet safe when on the move

Camper vans and mobile homes offer the ultimate flexibility for a pet-friendly British holiday. Many campsites across the UK are pet-friendly and provide amenities such as dog walking areas and pet washing stations.

The freedom of a camper van means you can easily find quiet spots for your pets to relax and enjoy nature. But just as with car travel, make sure your pet is safely and comfortably secured in a harness, crate or carrier before setting off.

Essential packing list for pets

Packing for your pets requires a bit of thought. Here’s a checklist to ensure you have everything you need:

  • Food and water: bring enough for the entire trip, plus bowls
  • Toys and comfort items: their favourite things can help them feel like they’re in a home away from home
  • First aid kit: include bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any medication that your pet may be on
  • Identification: make sure your pet has an up-to-date ID tag and consider a GPS tracker
  • Grooming supplies: brush, shampoo and towels for those inevitable muddy adventures
  • Waste bags and litter: keep the environment clean and tidy

Enjoying holiday activities together

Britain has plenty of dog-friendly beaches to explore

The UK offers a wealth of activities for you and your pets, with dogs particularly well catered for.

Explore dog-friendly beaches like Saunton Sands in Devon or Fraisthorpe Beach in Yorkshire. Take leisurely walks through the Lake District or the Cotswolds, where many trails and parks welcome dogs. Or for a unique experience, visit one of the UK’s dog-friendly attractions such as the Lost Gardens of Heligan or the Eden Project.

A summer getaway with your pets on these shores can be a memorable and rewarding experience. With proper preparation and consideration, you can ensure a fun and safe holiday for everyone involved. Happy travels.
