Stark County is under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Saturday, NWS says

A tornado watch was issued Saturday afternoon for several Ohio counties, including Stark.

A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, and people should stay alert and prepare for possible severe weather. It does not mean a tornado has been observed.

Parts of Ohio, including Stark County, are under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Saturday.

Parts of Ohio, including Stark County, are under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Saturday.

The National Weather Service said the watch will be in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday.

Stark is the only county in the Akron area that is under the watch.

Summit County, though, may have thunderstorms this afternoon, with wind gusts as high as 32 mph. Showers will continue until 1 a.m. Sunday, according to the weather service.

The tornado watch was also issued for several areas in West Virgina, Pennsylvania and New York.

The weather service had warned of strong to severe storms being possible in the Akron area on Saturday as a cold front moved across Northeast Ohio. This included the potential for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

The storms are expected to develop by midafternoon on Saturday and to clear out by Sunday. Mostly clear skies are forecast on Sunday, with highs in the 50s.
