Ryan Gosling was absent when Tom Cruise showed up on Star Wars movie set
According to the Happy Sad Confused podcast interview with Josh Horowitz, Ryan Gosling confirmed he was absent when Tom Cruise arrived on the Star Wars set, explaining it happened on the only day he took off during filming.
He said, “I wasn’t there, it’s the one day I’m not there.” He added that he had worked on the movie continuously apart from that single break.
He described how director Shawn Levy sent him images from the set showing Cruise and co-star Flynn Gray. Gosling recalled, “Shawn sends me a picture of him and Tom Cruise and Flynn in the mud.” The moment highlighted the unexpected nature of Cruise’s visit and involvement in filming.
Gosling further explained that the visit was sudden, stating the crew heard a helicopter and had to stop shooting. He said, “They were just shooting, and they heard a helicopter, they had to cut, and it’s just Tom Cruise.” He noted that Cruise landed directly on set and began filming immediately.
Gosling described Cruise’s actions on arrival, saying, “He lands in the middle of the set, he takes a camera and just starts shooting the action scene.” Gosling added that there was footage of Cruise in the mud filming Flynn, emphasizing the unusual nature of the event during production.
Separately, Gosling discussed his connection to Star Wars during filming, revealing he brought childhood bedsheets to set. He said, “The first sheets I ever had were Star Wars, and I had them in my trailer when I made the movie.”
He clarified that his mother preserved them and returned them to him when he joined the project. The film’s announcement highlighted this detail, using the sheets to illustrate his long-standing association with the franchise.
The film will be released in 2027 and features an ensemble cast.
