The EFC (European Football Clubs) assembly held this week in Prague concluded with a sense of unity that has prevailed in Europe since the end of the Super League conflict and Real Madrid’s return to the official UEFA football structure. However, there is an important nuance to this return to normality: Real Madrid is the only club in Europe that represents itself. No other club operates in that way.
All the others are part of the continental club association, the EFC, chaired by Al Khelaïfi and maintaining strong strategic and even commercial ties with UEFA. More than 800 teams are grouped within a single organisation, meaning they collectively carry the same weight in decision-making as Real Madrid does on its own. This represents a significant victory for the Spanish club in the aftermath of the Super League saga.
The EFC itself reaffirmed its positive stance towards Real Madrid and the importance of the Madrid club within its plans following the first club assembly held since the shift in the European landscape. “There is unity between the EFC, UEFA, Real Madrid, and A22. The recent joint communication between the EFC, UEFA, and Real Madrid was discussed, in which all parties committed to collaborating constructively for the good of club football,” the Al-Khelaïfi organisation said in a statement.
As was also the case in UEFA’s statement regarding the end of the Super League dispute, Real Madrid’s name is singled out, unlike the other clubs that withdrew from the project. The distinction of Los Blancos is evident at every level: from their individual influence in European football decision-making to the need for governing bodies to involve Real Madrid directly, even mentioning them by name, something that does not happen with any other club in Europe.
