(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A FOX21 News viewer shared photos after catching sight of a rare black fox prowling around the neighborhood near Barnes Road and Oro Blanco Drive on Sunday, March 8.
The photos show a striking black fox with a white-tipped tail ambling along the road between houses. The fox, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), is technically a red fox with a fairly rare genetic mutation that gives it the black coat. FOX21 News viewer, Kamrine, stated that the fox was spotted at around 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Foxes are commonly found in open woodlands and pasturelands, but they also survive well in urban areas, according to CPW, and they are most active around dawn or dusk. They often have multiple den sites, usually taking advantage of holes abandoned by other animals or depressions under buildings.
CPW states that though feeding foxes may be well-intentioned, it can ultimately cause them harm, and recommends keeping small pets indoors in areas where foxes are seen roaming.
