Brightburn, the 2019 R-rated thriller produced by James Gunn, will be leaving Netflix soon. Directed by David Yarovesky, the film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences on release. However, its run on streaming has brought new attention to the film.

Brightburn is leaving Netflix next month

Netflix subscribers will soon not be able to stream the R-rated horror film Brightburn on the platform. According to What’s on Netflix, the film is scheduled to leave Netflix on March 1, 2026. The movie first arrived in theaters in May 2019 and was produced by James Gunn and Kenneth Huang. Its screenplay was written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn.

The film centers on Tori and Kyle Breyer, a couple who adopt a baby boy found inside a mysterious spacecraft after years of trying to have a child. They raise Brandon as their own, believing he is special in a good way. However, as he grows older, dark changes begin to appear. Brandon develops powerful abilities and starts using them dangerously, putting the people around him at risk and forcing his parents to face the frightening reality about the child they adopted.

Elizabeth Banks stars as Tori Breyer, joined by David Denman as her husband Kyle in the film. Other cast members include Jackson A. Dunn as Brandon Breyer / Brightburn, Meredith Hagner as Merilee McNichol, Matt Jones as Noah McNichol, and Gregory Alan Williams as Sheriff Jerrold Deever, among others.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Brightburn has received a 57 percent critics’ score based on 206 reviews and a 67 percent audience rating on the Popcornmeter. The Independent reported, “Despite its simplicity, Brightburn’s premise is filled with potential, but it struggles to find anything meaningful to say.” 

Box Office Mojo reports that the film generated roughly $33 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
