Premier League clubs have already spent big on some new signings, and now we can anticipate more significant deals across Europe and beyond with the summer transfer window open

It has been a long few days, but Premier League clubs are once again allowed to sign new players. The transfer window is back open, and will remain so right up until September 1.
This summer has been different to others when it comes to transfers for English clubs. This is down to the first edition of the expanded Club World Cup, with an extra window introduced to allow competing clubs to strengthen ahead of the competition in the United States.
While Chelsea and Manchester City are the only Premier League sides in the tournament, all 20 teams in the top flight have been allowed to get some of their business done early. However, due to a restriction on the length of the transfer window, we couldn’t go straight through from the start of June until the start of September.
An exceptional extra transfer window opened on June 1 and ran for 10 days, predominantly with the goal of allowing clubs to register players in time for the Club World Cup. Among those to make such a move was Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Real Madrid paying millions to bring in the England star before his Liverpool contract expired at the end of the month.
All 20 Premier League clubs, as well as clubs from other federations with teams competing at the Club World Cup, were permitted to bring in new players ahead of the tournament. Now, with the window fully open, we can prepare for summer business to ramp up in earnest.

Alexander-Arnold was far from the only new player to link up with a Club World Cup side. Dean Huijsen joined him in Real Madrid’s tournament squad after completing a move from Bournemouth, while Chelsea included Dario Essugo, Mike Penders, Liam Delap and Mamadou Sarr – but not Estevao Willian, who will move to London after representing Palmeiras in the States.
Manchester City have also been busy, with Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli all joining in time for the tournament. There were some big deals for other Premier League clubs, too, including Matheus Cunha’s Manchester United switch and Jeremie Frimpong’s move to Liverpool.

A number of players have already lined up deals for when their contracts expire at the end of June, while others will be able to move for nothing when June ticks into July. Among the high-profile free agents are Premier League winner Jamie Vardy and Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.
Kieran Tierney and Kevin De Bruyne are among the out-of-contract players to already find new clubs. Tierney will return to Celtic from Arsenal, while De Bruyne is Napoli bound after a decade as a Manchester City player.
