Arsenal defeated West Ham 1-0 Sunday, May 10, at London Stadium, taking a massive step toward the Premier League title.
After a scoreless first half, Arsenal had an opportunity to take the lead courtesy of Declan Rice’s free-kick in the 69th minute. Ultimately, West Ham centerback Konstantinos Mavropanos cleared the ball off the line.
Nine minutes later, West Ham was close to taking a shocking lead against the visitors. However, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya came up with a massive save from Matheus Fernandes’ close-range effort.
In the 83rd minute, Arsenal substitute Martin Ødegaard found winger Leandro Trossard, who slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner to seal the three points.
During stoppage time, the Hammers thought Callum Wilson scored the match-tying goal. Ultimately, VAR and referee Chris Kavanagh decided that striker Pablo impeded Raya, disallowing the goal.
Manchester City kept the pace on Saturday when it defeated Brentford 3-0.
City’s 3-3 draw against Everton on May 4 gave the Gunners a massive boost atop the Premier League table. The North London side maintained a five-point advantage over City, which now has just one game in hand.
With just two league games remaining, Arsenal controls its own destiny. Win both matches, and the Gunners will clinch their first Premier League title in 22 years.
