Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects hormones in women. It causes irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne. In extreme cases, it can also lead to infertility. People with this health condition are at a higher risk of certain health conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure.

For the unversed, PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that occurs when your ovaries create excess hormones. If you have PCOS, your ovaries will produce unusually high levels of hormones called androgens. This further leads to hormonal imbalance, which causes irregular menstrual cycles, and at times missed periods.

When should a person get tested for PCOS?

PCOS is one of the most common causes of infertility in women. Before this condition gets too extreme, it is essential for you to get tested. For that, a woman needs to be aware and look out for signs and symptoms that hint towards the progression of PCOS. Mansi Sharma, Consultant- Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Motherhood Hospital, said, “The early warning signs of PCOS are irregular menstruation, skin tag, acne, weight gain, and abnormal hair growth. In case, a woman displays any of these signs then it will be imperative for her to seek timely intervention by consulting the doctor. It is not advisable to neglect PCOS and delay the treatment.”

Timely diagnosis will aid in the management of symptoms effectively and prevent complications like diabetes and heart disease that cause higher mortality and morbidity rates.

What are the different types of tests for PCOS?

While speaking to Times Now Digital, Dr Mansi explained, “Testosterone, DHEA-S, LH, and FSH are done to check for hormonal imbalances. Transvaginal ultrasound helps to know the presence of cysts on the ovaries and helps assess their size and number. Genetic testing, MRI, or CT can be recommended for women with PCOS.”

What are the do’s and don’ts before and after getting tested?

Dr Rajashri Tayshete Bhasale, Consultant Gynacologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, said, “Before testing for PCOS, don’t make any assumptions regarding this condition. It is not advisable to jump the gun. Be patient and wait for the exact diagnosis.” She further added that after the diagnosis it is essential to eat well, exercise daily, maintain an optimum weight, and stay stress-free by doing yoga and meditation.

Many tests require you to sleep for a certain amount to get an accurate diagnosis. PCOS tests are no different. Dr Mansi said, “Getting enough sleep before a test is crucial for accurate results when evaluating PCOS. Women with irregular sleep patterns may have higher levels of cortisol, which can impact hormone levels and lead to misdiagnosis of PCOS.”

She urged women to take at least 9 hours of quality sleep the night before the test as it can help balance hormone levels and provide appropriate results.

What is the right time of your menstrual cycle to get tested?

It becomes essential to choose the right day of your menstrual cycle to get tested for PCOS.

Timing is an important key factor in PCOS testing as testing too early or too late can sometimes lead to misleading results. Dr Mansi says, “This will help in obtaining accurate results. Generally, it is advised to schedule your PCOS test during 2nd or 3rd day of your period. During these days your hormonal levels are more stable.”

However, factors like stress levels and poor lifestyle choices can significantly impact your hormones. This hormonal fluctuation can potentially influence the test results, making it vital to follow necessary precautions like managing stress, eating healthy foods, and resting, followed by getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

Further testing after PCOS diagnosis

To minimize further risks of complications due to PCOS, the doctor will recommend women understand if they have sleep apnea, depression, and anxiety as these conditions take a toll on one’s overall well-being. It is better to go for these tests without any hesitation.

Cost of PCOS test

While the test cost will vary from place to place, it ranges somewhere around Rs 2,000- Rs 3,000.
