Some new details about Paranormal Activity 8 have emerged.
Paramount Pictures announced that Paranormal Activity 8 is officially in development earlier this year. The movie has been given a 2027 release date and will be directed by Ian Tuason, who recently made the A24 horror movie Undertone that is opening in United States theaters this weekend.
What is the update on Paranormal Activity 8?
While plot details for Paranormal Activity 8 remain under wraps at this time, Tuason did tell Bloody Disgusting that technology — and, more specifically, camera technology — will be a big element of the horror movie sequel.
“I felt like the franchise couldn’t be rebooted in any other way,” Tuason said. “…Technology — camera technology — has advanced to a point where it’s become a big part of the film and what I want to do there.”
Whether or not this means that Paranormal Activity 8 will be connected to the other films in the franchise remains unclear, as it hasn’t been announced if any characters from the previous films, including the demonic Toby, will be returning. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension also played into camera technology in a unique way; however, that movie was released in 2015, and there’s obviously a whole new sandbox of gadgets and gizmos for the creative team to now play around with.
The Paranormal Activity franchise officially began in 2009. That original, Oren Peli-directed film was then followed by Paranormal Activity 2 in 2015, Paranormal Activity 3 in 2011, Paranormal Activity 4 in 2012, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones in 2014, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension in 2015, and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin in 2021.
Paranormal Activity 8 currently has a May 21, 2027, release date.
Undertone, meanwhile, arrives on March 13. That movie stars Nina Kiri as Eve, Adam DiMarco as Justin, Michèle Duquet as Mama, Keana Lyn Bastidas as Jessa, and more.
