Italian football is experiencing turmoil after the unprecedented failure to qualify for three consecutive World Cup editions, leading to a series of prominent resignations, including the federation president, national team coach Gennaro Gattuso, and delegation head Gianluigi Buffon.
According to press reports, Maldini is considered the first choice proposed by Sports Minister Andrea Abodi to lead the federation in the upcoming phase, in search of a figure capable of implementing reforms to restore focus on developing young talents in Italy.
The Italian Football Federation presidential elections are scheduled for June 22, with candidates to be approved at least 40 days before the voting date.
Despite his nomination, Maldini’s acceptance of the position is not guaranteed, as he remains committed to Italian football only through AC Milan, where he served as development director in the 2018/2019 season before becoming the technical director until his departure in June 2023.
Maldini also owns a stake in Miami FC and has played 126 international matches with the Italian national team, a former record highlighting his significant status in Italian football history.
