Oppo Find X8 Ultra in for review

Here it is, the just-announced Oppo Find X8 Ultra is in the office and in for review, so let’s do an unboxing.

Oppo’s flagship phone ships with a transparent case (for the white and pink versions, it’s opaque on the black one), a USB-A to USB-C cable, a 100W charger, and a SIM eject tool.

We have the very refined Shell Pink model – it’s a very subtle pink hue, not too saturated, very understated. The feminine color is a pleasant change of pace from the myriad of same-looking black, grey, and white slabs.

Not that we have anything against black phones – here is Oppo’s newest Ultra in black – like the pink (and the white), it’s a matte finish. Both the metal side rails and the rear glass panel are soft-touch and matte. It makes for a clean, smudge-free phone.

The Find X8 Ultra is the slimmest in its class. It’s noticeable – the Find X7 Ultra is 9.5mm thick, the Find X8 Ultra is just 8.8mm. The new phone is also slightly shorter.

Oppo enhanced the form factor with the addition of not one, but two extra buttons. Well, technically one button, and a capacitive touch control. There’s a Shortcut button in the upper corner on the left side of the phone, which can be used to open the camera, turn on the flash, and add whatever you’re looking at to Breeno Memory. This button replaces the old mute switch on the Find X7 Ultra.

The Quick button is a thin and long capacitive touch surface on the bottom right of the phone, similar to the one on the Oppo Find X8 Pro. It reacts to touches with an affirmative vibration and can fool you into thinking it’s a real pusher. A double “press” on it opens up the camera. Sliding around will zoom in and out of different focal lengths, but only when you’re holding the phone in landscape – it doesn’t work in portrait orientation.

A final note on the buttons on the Oppo Find X8 Ultra – they’re chunkier and flatter than the thin ones on the Find X7 Ultra.

Oppo’s Find X7 Ultra was the first dual-periscope cameraphone, and the Find X8 Ultra is now the second. But Oppo made improvements to both cameras – the short tele has the same large 1/1.56-inch imager but adds a much brighter f/2.1 lens. The 135mm long telephoto has a new, larger sensor, and a brighter lens.

The main camera is seemingly the same 24mm f/1.8 unit with the largest mobile sensor – the 1-inch Sony LYT900. The ultrawide has seen a downgrade – it brings a smaller sensor and has a 1mm narrower field of view.

We snapped a few photos with the Oppo Find X8 Ultra to give you an idea of what to expect. We won’t go into a deep analysis of the samples, but will say this – Oppo’s finest cameraphone is an imaging force to be reckoned with. The images have incredible detail, a wide dynamic range, and deep contrast.

The Oppo Find X8 Ultra is possibly the most versatile cameraphone you could have – it covers your photographic needs from wide to the long end of the telephoto range. We’ll bring you more samples very soon!
