Olympiakos lost 4-3 to Real Madrid in Piraeus for the league phase of the Champions League on Wednesday and sees its chances of qualifying to the knockout stages diminish further, as it hovers just above the bottom of the table.
The Reds managed to avoid a crushing defeat, and even got to threaten Real with an equalizer in the last few minutes of the game at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
The Greeks had a dream start, taking an early lead from the 8th minute with Chiquinho after a wonderful team effort.
However after the 20th minute the Greek defense crumbled, with Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat trick within seven minutes. Vinicius added a fourth soon after, though that was disallowed as offside.
Olympiakos regrouped at half-time and pulled one back with substitute Mehdi Taremi on the 52nd, only for Mbappe to restore the Spanish giant’s two-goal advantage on the hour mark.
The hosts scored the final goal of the game nine minutes from the end with Abdul El Kaabi, but could not find a leveller in the end.
Therefore, with three games left to play in the league phase, Olympiakos has got two points from five games and is 33rd among 36 teams. Up next it will play Kairat Almaty in Astana.
At least Cypriot champion Pafos continues to make Greeks proud as on Wednesday it snatched yet another point, drawing 2-2 at home with Monaco. It now has six points from five games and stands 24th, just inside the group of teams that advance to the playoffs.
