Official | Wolfsburg appoint Dieter Hecking new head coach

Wolfsburg – after sacking head coach Daniel Bauer earlier today – have officially confirmed the re-hiring of former head coach Dieter Hecking. The 61-year-old returns to the Bundesliga outfit he last coached 10 years ago. Hecking brings with him the experience of having coached 443 Bundesliga matches with Wolfsburg, Nürnberg, Hannover 96, Alemannia Aachen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Most recently, Hecking coached VfL Bochum in the top flight last season. Wolfsburg were rumored to be interested in bringing in their former coach last week, but ultimately opted to stick with Bauer for one more match. After Bauer’s Wölfe lost their Bundesliga fixture against Hamburg yesterday, the Lower Saxon club opted to sack both Bauer and managing director Peter Christiansen.

Wolfsburg statements on Dieter Hecking’s hiring

Dieter Hecking brings exactly the experience we need in the current situation,” sporting director Pirmin Schwegler – who will be assuming Christiansen’s duties – noted in a club statement. “He knows the club, the environment, and also the demands of the Bundesliga very well. We are convinced that with his calm demeanor, expertise, and clear approach, he will give the team the stability it needs to achieve our goal of remaining in the league.

Returning to VfL Wolfsburg means a lot to me,” Hecking noted in his own club-released statement. “I had an intense and successful time here and know the quality and energy that this club has. Now we need to focus fully on the tasks ahead of remaining in the Bundesliga.
