Clive will close part of a street and designate space for protesters during President Donald Trump’s visit to Iowa.
Northwest 100th Street will be closed to vehicle traffic in both directions between Hickman Road and Swanson Boulevard from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, according to a news release from the city. Access to the Clive Greenbelt Trail and Maddox Parkway from Northwest 100th Street also will be closed during that time.
Trump is expected to deliver remarks on the economy and affordability Tuesday afternoon at the Horizon Events Center, 2100 NW 100th St.
City officials said the northbound lanes of Northwest 100th Street will serve as a designated “free speech area” for peaceful protest. Demonstrators may gather only on public property; the Horizon Events Center is private property, the city said.
The Iowa visit, Trump’s first since July and that comes after two deadly shootings this month by federal immigration officers in neighboring Minnesota, has prompted several protests locally, with multiple plans circulating online.
One protest promoted by Indivisible 515 advertises a demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m. near the venue. A separate advocacy group is planning a protest from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Clive officials said peaceful protest does not require a permit. Signs and inflatable costumes are allowed if they comply with city ordinances, and bullhorns and other amplified sound are permitted as long as they do not violate the city’s noise ordinance.
Those attending Trump’s event are directed to approach from the south via Northwest 100th Street the or east via Swanson Boulevard, with parking designated at Revision Church south of the events center.
Those planning to protest outside the event venue may park where allowed in nearby neighborhoods. Parking is limited and the city warns it may be necessary to park in areas further north and south of the Horizon Events Center.
“Please be respectful of the neighborhoods,” the release says. “Do not block streets, and please do not litter.”
