Paramount+ subscribers can now watch one of 2017’s most divisive drama movies starring Golden Globe nominee Nicholas Hoult and Oscar winner Kevin Spacey. During its theatrical run, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers alike. Despite garnering a low Tomatometer rating of 23%, it still received a higher Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes with 63%.

Beginning today, Hoult and Spacey’s 2017 biographical drama Rebel in the Rye is now officially available to stream on Paramount+. The film chronicles the life story of legendary writer J. D. Salinger, best known for his iconic 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. The ensemble cast also included Sarah Paulson, Zoey Deutch, Brian d’Arcy James, Victor Garber, Hope Davis, Lucy Boynton, James Urbaniak, Adam Busch, Jefferson Mays, Bernard White, and Kristine Forseth.
“Set amidst the colorful backdrop of mid-20th century New York City, Rebel in the Rye follows a young Salinger as he struggles to find his voice, pursues a love affair with famed socialite Oona O’Neill, and fights on the frontlines of World War II,” reads the official synopsis. “It’s these experiences that will inform the creation of his masterpiece, The Catcher in the Rye, bringing him overnight fame (and notoriety) and leading him to withdraw from the public eye for the rest of his life. Rebel in the Rye offers a tantalizing window into the life and times of a little-understood genius who broke the rules and redefined American literature.”
The movie was written and directed by Danny Strong, based on the J. D. Salinger: A Life Raised High novel by Kenneth Slawenski. It was executive-produced by Scott Ferguson, Christina Papagjika, Matthew Salloway, and Ellen H. Schwartz. Producers were Strong, Bruce Cohen, Thad Luckinbill, Trent Luckinbill, Jason Shuman, and Molly Smith.
