New taxis will appear on the city’s roads later this month. Hong Kong is all set to roll out five new taxi fleets, with service available as early as the end of March. Of the 3,500 new cabs, 1,900 will be electric.
Explore our handy guide to the Hong Kong public transportation system.
The five fleets — Joie, SynCab, Amigo, Big Boss, and Big Bee — will be a mix of hybrid, electric, and wheel-chair accessible vehicles. Each operator will have between 300 to 1,000 taxis under their belt, which accounts for about 20% of all taxis in Hong Kong.
What to expect from the five new fleets in Hong Kong?
The first taxi fleet Joie will start operating as early as the end of March 2025. The remaining ones will gradually commence services by late July. SynCab with its 425 cabs will be the only hybrid fleet to cover services in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Lantau, and the New Territories. Meanwhile, Amigo’s 1,000-strong vehicles will have a smart booking system.
Big Boss’ fleet of 300 cabs will be able to accommodate up to six seaters and have a sound system as well as automatic massage seats. Finally, Big Bee’s 1,000 electric vehicles will use real-time GPS positioning and include 5G Wi-Fi. The fleets have their own colour and design for easier identification, unlike existing cabs.

Hong Kong taxi service: The new fleet will accept e-payment
And as extra good news for passengers, these taxis accept e-payment such as Visa, Mastercard, and Octopus. Each vehicle also comes with safety features such as GPS, dashcams, and driver monitoring systems. To further revolutionise Hong Kong’s transport system, the government will propose some legislative changes. They will require all taxis in the city to install an in-vehicle recording system and offer at least two electronic payment methods.
There have been quite a few changes in the taxi industry including the closure of HKTaxi and a new penalty system for drivers with improper behaviour. Taxi fares also saw an increase in 2024.
