Netflix has enlisted a young Emmy-nominated actress to portray Daphne Blake in its upcoming live-action adaptation of Scooby-Doo, based on the classic animated series of the same name. The fan-favorite character was famously played by Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar in James Gunn’s Scooby-Doo movies.
Who is playing Daphne Blake in Netflix’s Scooby-Doo series?
According to Variety, The Handmaid’s Tale star Mckenna Grace has signed on for one of the leading roles in Netflix’s Scooby-Doo TV show. Grace will be playing the teenage Daphne Blake. Interestingly, she had already portrayed the character in 2020’s animated movie Scoob!, where she provided the voice for the kid version of Amanda Seyfried’s character.
The Regretting You star is no stranger to the horror comedy genre, as she previously starred in Sony Pictures’ most recent Ghostbusters movies. This also marks Grace’s latest collaboration with Netflix, after starring in 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House series. She will also next be seen in two high-profile movies this year, including Scream 7 and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
“It is a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog. During their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder,” reads the official synopsis. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever-so-handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
Based on the characters from Hanna-Barbera, the 8-episode series hails from showrunners and writers Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who are also executive producing through their production company Midnight Radio. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, and Jeff Pinkner are also set as executive producers. It is a production by Warner Bros. Television.
