Argentinian President Javier Milei praised his relationship with the US President Donald Trump in an address to parliament on Sunday. He said that he wants to make the “strategic alliance” with the US a “state policy.”
Milei stressed the need to maintain good ties with the US, highlighting the financial support provided by Washington last year and alluding to the “special relationship” he has with Trump, whom he defined as a “key ally.”
Milei also expressed his support for the US-Israel war with Iran that began on Saturday and put Argentina on high alert.
What Milei said about Argentina’s strategic location
During his 90-minute speech, Milei focused on Argentina’s role as a major source of raw materials and energy, as well as its strategic location. He said:
- “The South Atlantic is the strategic battleground of the coming decades,”
- “Argentina must be a ‘player’ in the region,”
- “We must create the century of the Americas: Make Americas Great Again, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego,”
- “We have the critical minerals that the West needs — gas, oil, nuclear power and renewable energy — to supply large-scale production chains.”
He boasted of Argentina’s location at the southern tip of the Americas, noting it has “access to two oceans and a presence in Antarctica.”
Milei hails his government’s success
During the speech, which came after a series of legislative wins for Milei, he hailed his government’s success in stabilizing the economy of Argentina. He said that he wants to expand his economic reforms.
He announced apackage of 90 reforms in the address to parliament on Sunday, saying they would “redesign” Argentina “for the next 50 years.”
The reforms will focus on economy, taxes, the criminal code, the electoral system, education, justice and defense, Milei said in his address.
The speech was greeted by applause from his supporters, as well as protests from the oppposition.
