Mike Flanagan’s Carrie television show has been officially greenlit.
Flanagan, who is known for making Netflix shows such as 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House and 2021’s Midnight Mass, is currently working on an adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie for Amazon MGM Studios.
Per Deadline, the series has now received an official greenlight. Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while he’ll also direct some of the episodes.
How many episodes will Mike Flanagan’s Carrie show have?
The show will have eight episodes in total. Hunter Hunter’s Summer H. Howell is in negotiations to play Carrie in the show, while Resident Evil’s Siena Agudong is being eyed to play her adversary, Sue Snell.
“Carrie is described as a reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother,” Deadline’s description of the plot reads. “After her father’s sudden death, Carrie finds herself contending with the challenges of attending high school, a bullying scandal, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”
Trevor Macy will also serve as an executive producer on Carrie alongside Flanagan.
“Carrie is an iconic story that has withstood the test of time with continued cultural relevance,” said Amazon MGM Studios’ Vernon Sanders. “With Mike Flanagan at the helm and the accomplished team assembled including executive producer Trevor Macy this provocative series is sure to captivate our global customers.”
King’s Carrie novel was published in 1974. It was turned into a 1976 movie directed by Brian De Palma that starred Sissy Spacek in the titular role, while Amy Irving played Sue Snell and Piper Laurie portrayed Carrie’s mother, Margaret. Following that, there was a 2002 television film directed by David Carson and a 2013 remake helmed by Kimberly Peirce that starred Chloë Grace Moretz.
A premiere date for Carrie has not yet been announced.
