Meta 夢醒了?傳元宇宙部門 Reality Labs 本週將裁員數百人,祖克伯轉身擁抱 AI

元宇宙(Metaverse)的夢想似乎真的敵不過 AI 的浪潮。Meta 傳出本週將對負責研發 VR 與元宇宙技術的 Reality Labs 部門開鍘,預計裁員數百人。這項舉動被外界視為一個明確的訊號:祖克伯(Mark Zuckerberg)已將公司發展重心從虛擬世界全面轉向人工智慧,畢竟相比之下,與雷朋(Ray-Ban)合作的智慧眼鏡在市場上還比較吃香。

根據《彭博社》與《紐約時報》報導,Meta 旗下的 Reality Labs 部門預計在本週執行新一波裁員,影響人數約數百人,約佔該部門員工總數的 10%。

據了解,這波裁員的刀口主要對準元宇宙團隊。這顯示 Meta 正積極調整戰略佈局,將原本投入在虛擬實境(VR)與元宇宙的大量資源與管理重心,轉移到目前獲利前景更明確的 AI 領域。

氣氛似乎相當嚴肅,報導指出,Meta 技術長 Andrew Bosworth 已經發出通知,安排在週三召開一場內部會議,並強烈建議員工「務必親自出席」,更直言這是「今年最重要的一場會議」。

公開資料顯示,博斯沃思掌管的 Reality Labs 目前擁有約 1.5 萬名員工。其實這次裁員並非毫無預警,上個月《彭博社》就曾爆料,Meta 計畫大砍元宇宙相關預算達 30%。在這樣的背景下,針對 VR 和元宇宙團隊進行縮編,似乎早在預料之中。

近年來,Reality Labs 燒錢速度驚人,但績效卻始終面臨巨大壓力。反觀 Meta 與雷朋合作推出的 Ray-Ban 智慧眼鏡,雖然技術門檻看似較低,但在市場銷售與話題熱度上卻意外亮眼,風頭甚至完全蓋過了公司主力推廣的 Quest 系列 VR 頭戴裝置。

平心而論,就算不談 AI 成為新寵,元宇宙本身在過去幾年的發展也確實遇到了瓶頸。使用者接受度不高、成長不如預期,加上 VR 社群平台的熱度明顯退燒,都讓 Meta 不得不重新審視這場豪賭的必要性。
