McTominay keeps Napoli title hopes alive: ‘You can never predict football’

Scott McTominay says he’s done ‘a lot of work in the gym’ to recover from a hamstring injury and insists Napoli will focus on one game at a time: ‘You can never predict football.’

McTominay was the match-winner and the best player on the field in Napoli’s 1-0 win over Cagliari on Friday.

The victory allowed the Partenopei to move second in the standings, but Milan and table leaders Inter have a game in hand.

“I’ve obviously had an issue with the hamstring tendon that needs managing. I’ve been doing a lot of work in the gym to get back to a high level and playing games regularly again,” McTominay told BBC Alba.

“I am a terrible watcher. No footballer wants to be injured – it’s the worst thing in the world.”

McTominay returned to action last week after missing the previous four Serie A matches.

On Friday, he scored the winning goal after just two minutes, but the Partenopei failed to kill the game off.

“There are games like that; sometimes you must keep pushing, and we tried to be honest, but they are a good team,” McTominay said.

“They make it really difficult; they are very compact. Having Kevin [De Bruyne] back is a huge plus, like Frank [Anguissa]. After the international break, we’ll try to push forward.”

After the break, the Partenopei will host Milan at the Stadio Maradona.

“Those are the games you want to play as a footballer. Great games. We just want to continue,” said the Scotland star.

“You can never predict football. It’s extremely difficult to judge where you’re going to be. You can just go one game at a time, and you’ll be in a good spot.”

McTominay will now join the Scotland national team for international friendlies against Japan and the Ivory Coast.

“I can’t wait. I’ve not seen many of the players since November – I’ve not been home since November. I’m looking forward to seeing friends and my family,” McTominay concluded.

“To see the boys and prepare for a great summer coming up is something that we’re really looking forward to.”

The former Manchester United star has now scored 11 goals and provided four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions this term.
