As 2025 draws to a close, many places in China have cancelled New Year’s Eve celebrations at the last minute and urged people not to gather in popular areas, causing disappointment among many netizens; Hong Kong has also cancelled its New Year’s Eve celebrations on November 26th. According to multiple media reports, the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau in Guangdong Province reminded the public that no large-scale mass activities of any kind, such as New Year’s countdowns, will be held in public places such as Beijing Road, Dongshankou, Guangzhou Tower, Yongqingfang, Huacheng Square, and the surrounding areas along the Pearl River on the evening of December 31. Citizens are urged not to bring drones, balloons, sky lanterns, or other flammable and explosive items into the aforementioned areas.
Zhengdong New Area in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, also issued a reminder that no official New Year’s countdown or New Year’s Eve performances or other large-scale public events will be organized in the Qianxi Plaza, Financial Island, Smart Island areas and surrounding business districts this year. During the holiday, public security and traffic management departments will implement crowd control or temporary traffic control measures on some road sections as needed.
