One of Manchester City‘s Premier League rivals have held initial talks over signing Kevin De Bruyne – who will leave the current champions in the summer – according to a report.

Speaking to the written media at the weekend, De Bruyne revealed that he was shocked and surprised when he was informed by City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain and CEO, Ferran Soriano during a brief meeting that his contract would not be renewed. Pep Guardiola was involved in the decision but not a part of the meeting where De Bruyne was informed.

‘There was a little bit (of shock),’ admitted De Bruyne. ‘I didn’t have any offer from them through the whole year and the club made a decision. Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I have to accept it. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing but I understand that clubs have to make decisions,’ the Belgian added.

‘I’m open for anything (next) because I have to look at the whole picture. I’m looking at sporting reasons, family and everything together and what makes the most sense for me and my family. I still feel like I can play at a good level, but after I’ll have to make a decision once I really know a little bit more.’

There have been suggestions in the fallout since that De Bruyne could therefore stay in the top flight, having previously been linked with the likes of the MLS and the Saudi Pro League.

But he has refused to rule out staying in the Premier League and, according to Sky Sports, Villa are one of the sides from the top flight who have enquired about a move.

The Sun report that De Bruyne is keen to stay in the UK with his family settled, which has alerted Premier League sides.

The publication also reports that Inter Miami, Chicago Fire, NYCFC and DC United have also made moves to sign the Belgian.

They are said to have asked about his professional and financial expectations, which Italy’s Como, managed by Cesc Febregas, are also thought to be keeping an eye on any movements.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, meanwhile, joked that he could sign for the Red Devils in order to not have to move house.

‘He has lit up the Premier League for so long’ former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given said during Sky Sports’ coverage of City’s game against Aston Villa on Tuesday night. ‘Kevin will admit he is not at his peak but you can see he still has a lot to offer. He can turn up at another Premier League club and that is a concern for City.

Keane interrupted: ‘United? He wouldn’t have to move house.’

De Bruyne has a maximum of seven domestic games left for City, with the club having five league games left to play as well as an FA Cup semi-final.

It is unclear, though if he will play in the Club World this summer. His contract expires on June 30, so he could at least play in the group stage, but a decision on his participation before he leaves the club has not yet been made.
