Kochi: Ernakulam rural police have detected a unique mode of theft and arrested the accused.Aluva police arrested Imran Khan, 34, of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. According to police, on March 14, a young man from Thrissur arrived at Aluva TCS iON Exam Centre on a scooter for an exam. He stored his purse and mobile phone under the scooter seat. When he returned in the afternoon, he found everything stolen.Upon contacting the bank to block his card, he discovered that Rs 65,000 had been withdrawn from his account. He immediately filed a complaint with Aluva police station.Police said the accused used a duplicate key to open the scooter and took the mobile phone and money kept in the dash.He then inserted the SIM into another phone, went to an ATM counter, changed the ATM PIN and withdrew money. The phone with the SIM was not used for calls to avoid detection.Police said similar thefts were reported in Aluva, Kollam-Kilikollur, Thrissur, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. UP police were also searching for him. He never stayed in one place. He was in Bhopal on March 23 and Coimbatore on March 27.The accused who came to Kerala for a new theft was caught from a lodge near Vyttila Hub on Sunday night. Around 10 duplicate keys for two-wheelers, three mobile phones and numerous purses were recovered from him. The accused has been remanded and will be taken into custody for further investigation, said police.
