As Brisbane Airport kicks off the Year of the Horse in 2026, the airport is seeing a massive surge in flight activity. With a 17.4% increase in Lunar New Year inbound capacity, the airport is welcoming more flights than ever before to and from major Asian cities, including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Taipei. The spike in travel is part of a broader trend that highlights the strong demand for Asian routes, especially during the Lunar New Year period.

Lunar New Year is one of the most significant travel periods in East and Southeast Asia. The holiday sees millions of people journeying home to reunite with family and uphold centuries-old traditions. This year, the Lunar New Year coincides with the Year of the Horse, a time symbolizing energy, ambition, and momentum. This energy is reflected in the record-breaking number of flights heading to key cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Taipei, marking the beginning of a highly successful travel season.

In comparison to last year, several major carriers have ramped up their offerings. China Southern Airlines has led the way with a 66.9% increase in seat availability, while Cathay Pacific and EVA Air have both boosted their capacity by 33.3%. China Eastern Airlines has seen a significant increase as well, with a 39.8% rise in the number of seats available. This surge is a direct response to the growing demand for air travel during this festive season.

The growth in Lunar New Year traffic is part of Brisbane Airport’s larger strategy to cater to the ever-increasing number of international travelers, particularly from China. The airport has been at the heart of a booming tourism and travel market, as visitors from China remain one of Brisbane’s largest and highest-spending inbound markets.

In fact, the number of passengers traveling on Chinese passports has surged by 19%, with a total of 315,000 Chinese travelers expected to pass through Brisbane Airport over the course of this year. This increase highlights the airport’s growing importance as a key international hub and its role in facilitating strong economic ties between Queensland and Asia.

As part of its efforts to enhance the travel experience, Brisbane Airport has introduced several exciting initiatives to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Passengers traveling through the airport can enjoy an interactive Chinese zodiac fortune exhibition located near the departure gates. For a bit of entertainment, the airport will also host traditional lion dance performances on February 17 and 20, bringing festive energy to the terminal.

In addition to these celebrations, Brisbane Airport has launched its own dedicated WeChat Mini Program, which caters specifically to Chinese travelers. WeChat is one of the most widely used digital platforms among Chinese travelers, and this new initiative ensures that users can access a wide range of services, such as real-time flight updates, retail promotions, dining recommendations, and online duty-free shopping. The Mini Program also provides Mandarin-language content, enhancing the cultural relevance and convenience for travelers.

Brisbane Airport’s commitment to growth is evident, with a $5 billion investment over the next five years as part of the Future BNE transformation project. This investment aims to increase the airport’s capacity and expand its network of international destinations. With the airport now connected to 35 international destinations, it is poised to continue its expansion as the region’s key gateway to Asia.

Lunar New Year represents a significant opportunity for tourism and local businesses in South East Queensland, with the influx of visitors driving demand in hotels, restaurants, bars, and tourism operators. As more travelers arrive to reconnect with family and friends, the impact on the local economy is profound.

The increase in flights, paired with the airport’s innovative initiatives, demonstrates Brisbane Airport’s growing stature in the international travel landscape. The Year of the Horse promises to be a time of bold changes and exciting opportunities for both travelers and businesses alike.
