US president-elect Donald Trump has reportedly invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to his inauguration. Should this be true, it would be an early indication of how Trump’s deal-making mentality will play out in his second term. Normal protocol is for the Chinese ambassador to the US to represent his country at such an event.
However, we are in unusual times geopolitically. While it is highly unlikely that President Xi would accept this invitation against protocol, perhaps Beijing could consider sending either Premier Li Qiang or Vice-President Han Zheng – more than a notch above the ambassador – and hope this may soften the face issue and put a positive spin on the episode as the United States and China gear up for a game of poker over the next four years.
At the people-to-people level, we generally get along well irrespective of our race, colour, creed or religion. Leaders around the world should promote cooperation and respect for each other. There will always be differences in governance and cultural traditions. Let us focus on solving the critical problems facing mankind – climate change as well as food and health security. There is still extreme poverty and suffering in evidence across this chaotic and troubled world.

A Confucian nugget for Trump
I refer to the letter, “Why Trump 2.0 shows dangerous signs of failing” (December 20). Your correspondent is wise to warn that the second Trump administration might repeat the mistakes of the first.
