The investment will fund two new recyclable packaging lines at the Girona site, which produces Nescafé instant coffee and Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules

Nestlé has announced a €15m ($15.8m) in its Girona coffee factory in Spain to increase the production of recyclable packaging for coffee products.   

 

The Swiss food and beverage giant has already begun construction on two new energy-efficient packaging lines at the site, which produces Nescafé instant coffee and Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules. 

The investment will see the Girona facility begin producing Nescafé refill bags in the country for the first time. The retail coffee bags, manufactured in Switzerland and transported to Spain since 2022, offer customers a more sustainable alternative to its customary Nescafé glass and plastic containers.  

Nestlé also plans to build a new high-throughput line at the site for Nescafé sachets made from recyclable monomaterial. The new line will have the capacity to produce 1,200 sachets per minute and is expected to reduce the use of virgin plastic by 60 tonnes per year.  

Nestlé’s Spanish business achieved 4% like-for-like sales growth in 2024 to reach €2.6bn ($3.1bn), with its coffee business growing in volume and number of cups consumed. 

 

The food and beverage giant invested more than €76m in Spain in 2024 and currently operates 10 factories across Spain, including a second coffee facility in Reus, south of Girona. Nestlé previously announced a €100m ($105m) investment in its Girona factory in September 2022.
