HBO Max has set the streaming release date for a cult classic DC superhero movie starring Keanu Reeves. Constantine is one of the many film titles making its way to the streamer next year.
Released in 2005, the film loosely adapts the Hellblazer comic book series. It follows the eponymous protagonist, a cynical occult expert who can perceive and communicate with half angels and half demons.
Constantine to stream on HBO Max next year
Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, will start streaming on HBO Max on January 1, 2026 (via How-To Geek).
Following its release in 2005, the film grossed an estimated $230.9 million worldwide against a production budget of $70-100 million. Meanwhile, the film made an estimated $154 million in international markets.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts a rotten score of 46% and an audience score of 72%. Meanwhile, Metacritic shows a metascore of 50, indicating “mixed or average reviews,” and a user score of 7.4, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.
Francis Lawrence directed Constantine from Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello’s screenplay. Besides working on the screenplay, Brodbin also developed the film’s story. Lauren Shuler Donner, Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Erwin Stoff, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Akiva Goldsman produced the film.
Meanwhile, Philippe Rousselot handled the film’s cinematography, while Wayne Wahrman edited it. Brian Tyler and Klaus Badelt composed the film’s music. Apart from Keanu Reeves, Constantine’s cast includes Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Djimon Hounsou, Max Baker, and Pruitt Taylor Vince, among many others.
The film’s story follows John Constantine, a demon hunter and occult expert. Angela Dodson, a troubled LAPD detective, enlists Constantine’s help in solving her twin sister, Isabel’s, mysterious suicide.
A sequel is reportedly in development. While speaking to Inverse earlier this year, Reeves revealed he and the creatives had pitched the film’s story to DC Studios, which approved it. He then said that he and the creatives were going to start work on its screenplay. Notably, the John Wick star didn’t divulge the sequel’s plot, but teased that Constantine would “be tortured even more” in it compared to the first film.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn later revealed in an appearance on BobaTalks that he had discussed the sequel with Reeves but had not yet read a script.
