In food experimentation, the blending of historical recipes with superfoods has gained momentum. Among such developments is the incorporation of chia seeds in the traditional Indian roti to produce the ‘Chia Seeds Roti’. Apart from boosting the nutrition quotient of the staple food, the modification also introduces a new texture and flavour.
Social Media Spotlight: Chia Seeds Roti Viral Trial
Chia seeds, famous for their richness in fibre, may help in digestion by lubricating stools and providing bulk, making bowel movement smoother and could even relieve constipation.
Also, certain research indicates that chia seeds can have a positive effect on the gut bacteria and nutrient uptake. Adding them to roti offers a convenient and effective manner of boosting one’s daily level of nutrients.
The procedure is to mix chia seeds with whole wheat flour, kneading the mixture to form a dough, and cooking it just as one would cook normal roti. The blend gives a soft, edible flatbread with a mild nutty flavour.
The food community on the internet platforms was buzzing with this chia-flavoured dish. Food content creator and nutritionist Pooja Dhall (@dewan.e.khaass) also joined the bandwagon with a reel titled ‘Ep 3 – Testing Viral Chia Seeds Roti – Will it Work?’ The reel highlights the process of preparing the dish, bringing out the ease of steps involved and the benefits for health.
The reel has made huge waves, garnering over 111,000 likes and initiating countless conversations among viewers.
When Dhall ate the roti, she responded with dual emotions. While she was all set to try out the superfood version first, she found the texture a bit off in terms of the crunch of chia seeds. Her verdict? ‘It’s not bad, but not great either!’
She accepted the health advantages but was concerned that the texture could be something she would need to get used to. The reel has sparked controversy, with individuals debating whether taste or health should be prioritised.

Netizens Share Their Reactions

The Chia Seeds Roti has received a mixed response. While some enjoy the extra health benefits and cannot wait to try it at home, others agree with the content creator that the texture would not be for everyone. Some users even proposed soaking the chia seeds first to soften the roti.
While some showed concern that eating that much chia seed is not good for health. Eating excessive amounts of chia seeds can cause indigestion with symptoms of bloating, gas, or abdominal pain in a few people.
Additionally, since chia seeds can absorb water and swell, they should be taken with enough fluid so that there is no risk of choking or obstruction in the intestine.
This viral food trend identifies the increasing popularity of combining health-orientated ingredients into daily meals.
