Dominik Szoboszlai, standing in at right-back, opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick after a tight first-half, but Liverpool’s lead did not hold as Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland found the back of the net in the dying stages.
To rub salt in the wounds, Szoboszlai was then shown a red card in the 113th minute of play, leaving Arne Slot with a selection headache.
He will be without both first-choice right-backs, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, through injury for the trip to Wearside, with usual deputy Joe Gomez expected to miss out through injury, too.
It remains to be seen who will get the nod from Slot, but Andy Robertson, Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones are all possible options. Calvin Ramsey is also in the fold, though Slot played down the question of his involvement in his pre-match media duties.
