Temperatures have soared across North India this summer, with some regions facing extreme heat. In Rajasthan, one city recently recorded a blistering 50°C. While seasonal highs typically range from 40°C to 50°C, anything above 45°C can trigger serious health issues. In such conditions, the heat often becomes intolerable, requiring immediate cooling to prevent harm.
How Much Heat Can The Human Body Endure?
This raises a critical question: to what extent can the body withstand such heat, and when does it turn fatal? Although high temperatures don’t directly cause death, they can elevate the core body temperature to 40°C or more. At that point, the body’s cooling mechanism fails, leading to heat stroke, a potentially fatal condition.
Medical experts explain that people can endure external temperatures above 50°C if hydration is maintained and the body’s cooling systems remain effective. The human body performs best at an internal temperature of 36.5°C to 37.5°C. A rise to 40°C, however, poses a serious threat to organs and brain function.

Each year, heat stroke claims lives during peak summer. Research warns that sustained external temperatures above 55°C make it nearly impossible to maintain safe internal conditions.

Yes, high humidity makes the situation worse. It hampers the body’s ability to cool down through sweating. While external heat alone doesn’t kill, it becomes deadly when it pushes internal temperatures to dangerous levels.
How to Protect Your Body in Extreme Heat
To stay safe during extreme heat, hydration is key—drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks, as they can dehydrate the body further. Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothes that allow your body to breathe and sweat effectively. Avoid going out in the sun during peak hours, typically between 12 pm and 4 pm.
If you must step out, carry an umbrella or wear a wide-brimmed hat to reduce direct sun exposure. Indoors, use fans, coolers, or air conditioning, and keep curtains drawn to block out heat. A damp cloth on the neck, wrists, or forehead can help regulate body temperature.
During power outages, sponge baths with cool water can provide relief. Most importantly, check in on elderly family members, children, and pets—they’re especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
