HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — The Horry County Council voted to support the naming of a portion of I-73 “President Donald J. Trump Highway,” removing the requirement that the road receive federal funding before the end of Trump’s presidential term.

The county resolution supports a greater proposal from the South Carolina General Assembly.

Horry County previously committed to providing a $450 million match for the portion of I-73 within the county, contingent on the highway being fully funded to I-95.

After a county committee meeting Jan. 27, the reolution was revised to include the final statement, “The support for naming is withdrawn if funding is not allocated prior to January 20, 2029.”

“The main goal here is to see that we could get some federal funding towards the project. That would be the additional, some state funding towards the project. Then we could use our match to go towards completing the highway. So that’s the main objective,” councilman Dennis DiSabato said during the meeting.

In the council meeting Tuesday night, members quickly moved to remove the final statement, requiring funding before Trump leaves office, as they affirmed their support for the resolution.

The full resolution now reads as follows:

WHEREAS, Horry County is the largest county in the State of South Carolina that is not directly serviced by

a modern, high-capacity interstate highway system; and,

WHEREAS, Horry County has long recognized the need and supported the establishment of a safe and fast

regional interstate connection by dedicating significant local funding and prioritizing I-73 construction in the

local RIDE IV road improvement programs; and,

WHEREAS, Horry County has worked with our neighboring counties of Marion and Dillon to join in

Resolution R-65-11 (2011) to support the benefits such a highway would bring for safety, the economy, job

creation, and the quality of life to our businesses, residents, and millions of annual visitors; and,

WHEREAS, Despite being recognized by the United States Congress as a Project of National and Regional

Significance since 2005, the roadway was without a significant impetus to bring it into fruition; and,

WHEREAS, Under the administration of President Donald J. Trump, a federal permit was issued in 2017

which allowed for the project to move forward towards construction; and,

WHEREAS, President Donald J. Trump, in his second administration, has renewed and continued his support

of I-73 and has become the national champion of this beneficial project; and,

WHEREAS, Our federal and State elected representatives support the I-73 project, and members of the Horry

County Legislative Delegation in the South Carolina Statehouse have proposed a concurrent resolution which

recognizes the significant, continuous, and results-driven support of President Donald J. Trump towards the

completion of I-73 by dedicating the South Carolina portion in his name.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Horry County Council resolves in support of the construction

of I-73; and supports the naming of the I-73 corridor in South Carolina as the “President Donald J. Trump

Highway”; and further supports the legislative efforts of our state representatives to these effects.
