Hong Kong’s M+ museum will showcase Pablo Picasso’s works through a contemporary Asian lens, alongside complementary pieces by modern artists from the region, according to the show’s curator.
M+ artistic director and chief curator Doryun Chong also said at the exhibition preview on Thursday that providing creative content for tourists to come back to “again and again”, as well as infrastructure, was required for the city to become a cultural hub.
“The West Kowloon Cultural District is such a central and strategic part of Hong Kong being presented as the gateway and the centre of East and West intercultural exchange,” Chong said, adding the museum had welcomed more than 8 million visitors since its opening three years ago.
“I think we are deeply contributing to the return of the tourism and a remaking of Hong Kong as a cultural destination, not just the destination for shopping and food.”
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Picasso for Asia – A Conversation will open to the public on Sunday and run until July 13 at the West Gallery of the museum.
More than 60 pieces by the Spanish master will be on show, along with a curated selection of 130 works by 30 Asian or Asian-diasporic artists.
