A 50-year-old tourist from Hong Kong has died after losing consciousness when diving in South Africa, Chinese state television reported.
According to the report, the Chinese Consulate in Cape Town confirmed on Monday that the deceased was a man from Hong Kong, a day after the South African National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said it had received a report of a male tourist being pulled unconscious from the water at Port Elizabeth.
The Institute said emergency personnel had tried to resuscitate the man after he had surfaced from a scuba dive unconscious, but in vain.
Institute spokesman Justin Erasmus told the Chinese state television that the man was first recovered onto the dive charter boat with cardiopulmonary resuscitation performed by the crew before being transferred to their rescue craft, with NSRI medics continuing with CPR.
The man’s body has been placed with South Africa’s Forensic Pathology Service, the report added.
